Of the thousands of businesses that have trusted their employee administration and compliance responsibilities to be handled by a Professional Employer Organization (PEO), many are unaware that of the 489 PEOs in the nation, only 56 (11.5%) of them are IRS-certified.

The IRS certification program requires annual renewal to ensure that a PEO is financially sound by, among other things, requiring evidence of business experience and audited financial statements and quarterly reports prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) that reflect positive working capital. The IRS certification program formally codifies PEOs within the tax code and recognizes the key role PEOs play in helping small and mid-sized businesses grow and thrive. The program also provides added assurance to business owners who want to turn to a PEO to handle their employment tax issues and back-office administrative and HR tasks.
