Fear has traditionally been one of the main obstacles obstructing a business’s ability to adapt and grow. But the coronavirus pandemic forced business owners the world over to confront that fear whether they were ready or not. Those that did not rapidly adjust saw their company fade into irrelevance, but those that survived began to run smarter and more efficiently.

Now, through the trials of the past year, owners have a unique opportunity to apply their experiences toward better business practices for the future. Here is a checklist for businesses to apply some of those lessons learned:

We must continue to focus on company safety policy moving forward. Increased sanitization and social distancing were major issues in 2020. Be sure to identify any deficiencies in your current programs. Shoring up work health and safety practices will have long-term benefits including reduced absenteeism and the prevention of costly workplace injuries and illnesses.

Employers with health and benefits plans should consider updating their coverage options to account for the items that are most pressing to their employees this year, then clearly communicate those plans, notices, and disclosures to their workforce.

To minimize the need for emergency leave, employers who are not already doing so should consider implementing a work-from-home policy. Through collaboration and technology, absences can be decreased through short-term remote work.

Employers should invest in maintaining a strong data security practice that encompasses potential remote work options, as well as increased consumer traffic through digital doorways like email, the company website, or ordering apps.

Review your company practices to account for any new challenges in your industry in the past year and make every effort to reduce “red tape.” Written policy should be clear, fair, and easily accessible to all.

Employers have learned to respond in real-time with legal counsel and government relations staff to an almost overwhelming volume of federal, state, and local mandates. Employers should continue to respond to future developments under normal circumstances in a proactive timeframe.

If you find that you are overwhelmed by new regulations or simply do not have time to implement the changes you wish, consider enlisting a specialist to help ease your administrative burdens. This is precisely the reason Employer Advantage exists, as a servant to the business community.

Not Out of the Woods Just Yet…

Short term, employers should realize that the pandemic continues to take a devastating toll on the health, well-being, and economic security of tens of millions of Americans. Business owners should continue to do their best to provide a safe working environment while remaining sensitive to this new reality with every business decision.

Employer Advantage not only comprehensively manages the complexities of employee administration and compliance responsibilities (Payroll, Health & Benefits, Safety) – we guide our clients through the ever-changing landscape of:

  • CDC guidance.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
  • Complex staffing problems and workers located in multiple states and countries.
  • Furloughs and unemployment.
  • Important documentation and deadlines necessary in applying for critical government aid packages like the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and other tax credits.
